The decision of the Union government to establish the AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) at Thoppur in Madurai is a victory to the people of southern Tamil Nadu.
Thanking the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, ministers, MPs, MLAs, political representatives from various parties, trade and industry office-bearers and among others, V S Manimaran, chief coordinator of the umbrella organisation - “Maduraiyil AIIMS Maruthuvamanaikana Makkal Iyakkam” said here on Saturday that the premier hospital would serve a huge population of around three crore in the 9 to 10 districts in this segment.
Recalling the 18 month struggle, he said that the number of visits to New Delhi to meet the Central Ministers and the filing of writ petitions in the High Court Bench and the number of demonstrations had brought in fruits. Even after the on-the-spot study conducted by an expert committee from Centre, the delay in announcing Madurai as the choice, tested the patience. However, without showing any anger, the struggle continued.
A small group of five, who discussed the significance about the presence of AIIMS like institution in Madurai in a room in MADITSSIA auditorium two years ago, finally gathered a number of outfits and brought in many political parties under one umbrella, which turned into a people’s movement, Mr. Manimaran said and appreciated the media’s role, without which, the message wouldn’t have reached the masses.
