Hush-hush swachh survey by Central team puzzles Jaipur Municipal Corporation

JAIPUR: While the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) is waiting for the Central government team to survey the city for the Swachhta Survekshan 2019, speculations are rife that the team has already left on Thursday, after reviewing cleanliness in the city without informing JMC authorities.

The team, Quality Council of India (QCI), is responsible to survey cities around the country for the Swachh Bharat ranking. The nodal officer of the Swachhta Survekshan, Vinod Purohit said that he had heard the news that QCI had already left the city after conducting the inspection, but is not sure about it. “We have heard the news about it but no concrete information has been received and we are not allowed to contact the Central team on the matter. We are just focusing on our work right now. We will see when the team will come or when this gets confirmed,” said Purohit.

Jaipur attained 39th rank in 2018 Swachh ranking, becoming the fastest moving state capital in the country. The expectation with the state to attain better ranking this year has been high, but with the rather lazy approach of the JMC authorities, who couldn’t even realise the arrival of the QCI team, there is little hope. As per a source, QCI team inspected many areas of the city and in the end, went around ward no. 37, before leaving.

Last year, three teams arrived in the city. While two teams inspected the areas of the city secretly without telling the JMC officials, third team went to the JMC office, reviewed the documents of solid waste management and construction of toilets in the city. The team took citizens’ feedback as well. This year JMC is competing for 5,000 points with more than 4,000 cities in the country.

However, the recently held state assembly elections, change of mayors and conflict with the BVG company, have come to affect the cleanliness of the city. There have been many complaints of garbage collection vehicles’ frequency going down in many areas, with delay of one week. As per an official at JMC, BVG company which is in tussle with the JMC for the remaining dues, has cut short the vehicles’ number. Open defecation is still a reality in the city, with people complaining of poor maintenance of the public toilets.
