Kumarasamy lake is clean & pristine after cleaning drive
TNN | Jan 27, 2019, 00:40 ISTCoimbatore: More than 1.5 tonnes of waste - mainly remains of puja and last rites, and plastic overs - were removed from the Kumarasamy lake in the city on Saturday.
The cleanliness drive was taken out by the Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI) to sensitize the public about ill-effects of water pollution. The drive saw participation of more than 30 volunteers, besides sanitary workers. They cleaned the lake, which is spread across 70 acres, on the occasion of the 70th Republic Day of the country.
The lake is infamous for dumping puja materials. Since it is located close to a crematorium, people also dump garlands and clothes of the deceased in the lake, said Sanjay Prasad, chief coordinator of EFI. “The city corporation has put up a board asking people not to dump ritual remains in the lake, but it hasn’t served any purpose. However, the pollution level has considerably come down over a period of time.”
Pointing out that birds such as pelicans, Indian cormorant, painted stork, spot billed duck were commonly found in the lake, he said they often get trapped in the waste and even end up dying in some cases. “During the cleaning drive, we saw spot-billed ducks struggling to move with plastic covers tangled around their legs.”
Sanjay Prasad said only when people participate in cleaning drives like these, they would realize the importance of water bodies and take a decision not to pollute them.
