KOLKATA: A mob vandalised Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata on Friday after the death of a 68-year-old patient. The family alleged medical negligence.

Garden Reach resident Jawahar Shaw, who was admitted to the hospital on January 14 with “severe lung infection”, had to be put on ventilation. Shaw was being treated in the hospital for more than eight years for Parkinson’s. His son Charu alleged that they wanted to shift the patient to another facility as this hospital specialised only on neurological ailments. “The hospital had charged us more than Rs 3 lakh. They were not letting us shift my father till we cleared the entire bill. In the meantime, my father died without proper treatment,” Charu alleged. The family took away the body after the hospital decided to waive dues that amounted to almost Rs 2 lakh.

The hospital denied the charge.
