PATIALA: Punjab’s chief electoral officer (CEO) S K Raju on Friday said that the Election Commission was fully geared up for upcoming parliamentary polls in Punjab. He said that VVPAT machines would be used for all 23,124 polling booths in 13 parliamentary constituencies across the state.
Divulging details about the VVPAT, the CEO said that the voter-verifiable paper audit trail allows voters to see a printed slip for seven seconds. The slip carries the serial number, name, and symbol of your chosen candidate. It allows the voter to confirm that your vote has gone to the candidate of your choice.
He said that the maximum participation of voters in the democratic process was the key to the formation of a good government. Administering the oath for exercising their franchise by rising above the caste, colour, creed or sex, CEO said that the special efforts would be made to engage students in all in educational institutions in the electoral process.
While addressing the gathering at state-level function to mark National Voters Day here, Raju said that the Election Commission has taken many steps for free and fair polling.
He said that in the upcoming elections, more than 2.50 lakh first time voters would cast their votes. He said that the Election Commission was set up on this day in 1950 and since 2011, National Voters Day was celebrated across the nation.
Earlier, Ludhiana deputy commissioner Pardeep Aggarwal and Kapurthala deputy commissioner Mohammed Tyab were awarded for being best performing district electoral officer, especially in creating awareness for ethical voting and registration of new voters. Besides, SDM Jaito Amandeep Kaur was awarded best ERO and Pankaj Kumar as best BLO. For SVEEP activities, Naresh Mahajan from Pathankot, and Suresh Kumar from Bathinda were also awarded.
