CHENNAI: Following a series of murders, the city police have cracked down on criminals and history-sheeters. In one day alone, at least 62 repeat offenders were rounded up from Mylapore, Kilpauk and Triplicane areas.
The suspects were nabbed by the special teams organised by V Balakrishnan, joint commissioner of police, east zone, Chennai city. Police personnel used the mobile app Facetagr to verify if they have cases pending against them.
Police said Kumaran, a criminal, was murdered at Pulianthope due to an old rivalry, while Kumaresan, another gangster, was killed in broad daylight in Arumbakkam. Following the murders, city police commissioner A K Viswanathan ordered his subordinate officers to crack down on criminals active in the city.
A senior police officer said, the names of the criminals were put in a list and special teams led by a police inspector and sub-inspectors at all the police stations in east zone were assigned to check for suspects. “We have taken an undertaking and booked them under 109 and 110 of the CrPC,” said an officer. At least two dozen criminals were arrested and sent to Puzhal prison.
The officers have been conducting routine vehicle checks at odd hours and combing areas to check for any criminal activity.
Meanwhile, as many as 5,000 police personnel will be on duty during the Republic Day festivities at Marina on Saturday. Police sources said that vehicle checks will be done throughout Friday night and there will be a scrutiny of guests at lodges and hotels to make sure there’s no suspicious activity. All the commercial hubs in the city, including T Nagar, Broadway and Koyambedu and railway stations will be under police scanner.
