Udupi: The 70th Republic Day was celebrated with patriotism at the Mahatma Gandhi Bayalu Rangamandira on Saturday. District minister Jayamala hoisted the national flag. She said in her inaugural address, “As a citizen of India, it is our responsibility to put in efforts to maintain peace in the country.”
The minister further briefed about various development works taken up by the state government in the district through the zilla panchayat and taluk panchayat. A total Rs 1,289.74 lakh is being sanctioned for various development works in the district, she said.

She added, “1,215 children of SC/ST communities were given hostel facilities through online applications. The community students who pass SSLC exams by scoring between 60% to 74.99 % are given Rs 7,000 and above 75% are given Rs 15,000 each.”

“ A total 32 new teachers have been appointed for the district. For the Ksheera Bhagya and Akshara Dasoha schemes, Rs 1,221.40 lakh was released and 83,157 students were beneficiaries of the project. Likewise, funds are given for the construction of a school building, to buy sports equipments, for a lab, toilet and other facilities. For the Karnataka Darshan programme, Rs 22.51 lakh was given to 643 children to visit historical places.

Under urban development, in the year 2017-18, a sum of Rs 9.89 crore has been sanctioned under SFC and the 14th Finance Commission for five local bodies, and basic works have been taken up. Under the Swachh Bharat abhiyan, plans have been made for waste management in Udupi and Kaup.

Under the housing scheme, 682 eligible homeless families will get housing. For this purpose 11 acres has been sanctioned in Udupi city, Karkala-15 acres, Kaup-5.2 acres and Kundapur-10.55 acres, which has already been identified.


“Physically-handicapped children were also given financial aid under various schemes, and people who marry the physically-handicapped are given Rs 50,000 as an incentive. A total 15 HIV-affected people were given a loan of Rs 25,000 each, at 4% interest, to start their own business.


The food department has distributed 1,84,869 ration cards, out of which 29, 209 are Antyodaya cards and 1,55,660 are BPL cards. “Importance has been given to develop the tourism, agriculture and horticulture departments,” she added.


A bull belonging to the top cattle breed ‘Ongole,’ which won best bull award representing Udupi at the show held at the Raichur district krishimela, was the special attraction on the occasion. There were various cultural programmes held on the occasion, and a tabloid representing ‘voting rights’ was a part of the procession.
