KOLKATA: Civic workers on Friday afternoon came up trumps but only after some canines inside NRS Hospital left them breathless from chasing them around the hospital compound.
Some of the frail and timid mongrels proved to be the most agonising for more than 20 civic workers who ran behind them with lassos and made several unsuccessful attempts to put the noose around their necks. KMC workers even alleged an uneven contest when some relatives of patients refused to share intelligence on the dogs’ hideouts. After two excruciating hours, the workers could pack off 17 dogs in five vehicles to a facility in Dhapa for sterilisation.
Friday’s drive at NRS has come in the backdrop of killings of 16 puppies allegedly by some nursing students two weeks ago. The killings enraged animal lovers and activists but a section of nursing students said dogs inside the hospital often attacked and bit them. Hospital officials and KMC then decided to carry out a sterilisation and vaccination drive for dogs in government hospitals and other public places.
There are close to 30 dogs inside NRS. Three lactating mothers were allowed to stay back in hospital compound. There was strong police arrangement inside the hospital during. “We have administered anti-rabies vaccine to many of the dogs. They will be sterilised at the Dhapa dog compound and rehabilitated at NRS Hospital again,” said Gautam Mukherjee, senior veterinary officer of KMC.
Vets will make a mark on their ears which will denote that they have been sterilised.
