Republic Day celebrated with patriotic fervour

Coimbatore: The district on Saturday observed the 70th Republic Day with cultural events.
Collector TN Hariharan hoisted the national flag on the VOC Grounds in the morning and distributed welfare aid to the tune of Rs 49.11lakh to 126 beneficiaries. Police department, fire and rescue services department, National Cadet Corps and Red Cross formed a part of the Republic Day parade.

The collector honoured 138 police personnel with medals for their service. Similarly, 11 personnel form the rural development agency, 17 from the school education department, 28 from the health department, four from Siddha medicine department, seven from rural welfare department and six general sanitation workers were honoured. Freedom fighters and their descendants were also felicitated.

Welfare fund distributed were from the departments of ex-servicemen welfare, differently-abled persons welfare, backward classes and minorities welfare, adi dravidar and tribal welfare, agriculture, agriculture engineering, horticulture and revenue.

The event also featured cultural performances by school and college students. While students from Kongunadu Arts and Science College enthralled the gathering with karagattam, a folk-dance performance, 135 students of PSGR Krishnammal Higer Secondary School put up a grand display of group dance performance.

Government and educational institutions in the city also observed the day. At the District Central Library, librarian P Rajendran hoisted the tricolour. Library employees and readers participated in the event.


At the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, vice-chancellor N Kumar unfurled the flag and addressed the gathering. He spoke about how successful implementation of innovative technologies transformed India into a self-sufficient country in-spite of increasing population.


PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research held a National Cadet Corps event on the campus followed by a cultural parade in which students exhibited costumes of different cultures in the country.


Sri Krishna Institutions celebrated the day with events such as patriotic songs, dances, skits and silambattam. Oath-taking ceremonies, visit to orphanage homes and tree planting were also conducted.
