MCG starts talks for taking over new sectors

Gurgaon: MCG has decided to take over maintenance and operations of new areas of Gurgaon — sectors 57 and 115 — a move that will bring relief to thousands of residents settled in these places.
While the timeline for the takeover hasn’t yet been spelt out, the corporation has started talks with residents of the area. MCG commissioner Yashpal Yadav told TOI they were interested in taking over developed sectors along SPR and Dwarka Expressway. “We started communicating with residents and RWAs, asking if they would be interested in us taking over. Once the initial survey is done, we can start work on the proposal,” said Yadav.

This comes after several complaints from residents of new sectors about lack of basic facilities in their areas, such as garbage pick-up and streetlights. Once they are taken over, the corporation will be responsible for all issues including management and disposal/operation of waste, internal sewer lines, water distribution, streetlights, parks and stormwater drains. Currently, the onus of maintaining these services in the new sectors is left entirely on RWAs or developers.

There is, however, still lack of clarity on the responsibility of developing and maintaining of internal roads, because as per policy, developers are supposed to build roads in new sectors.

Talking about the resources needed, Yadav said finances won’t be a problem as the corporation will start charging taxes from residents of these areas once they come under its ambit. “In terms of manpower, we had sent a proposal to the state government for additional hiring and are hoping it will be approved soon,” said Yadav.

TOI had reported in October last year, that MCG had sought the creation of 1,347 additional posts across 62 different categories. As of now, the number of sanctioned posts is 268. The corporation’s engineering wing is the worst affected, and needs the maximum additional manpower.

Thus, MCG has sought the creation of 145 posts in the engineering wing alone, in addition to the 55 posts already sanctioned. The proposal has asked for six executive engineers in addition to the existing seven, 28 assistant engineers (over the 16 posts already sanctioned) and 56 junior engineers (over the 32 existing posts).

Meanwhile, the takeover of private colonies that is already in progress, is expected to be completed by February. With HSVP sectors, private colonies and now new sectors under its belt, MCG will soon have its task cut out.
