Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been mercilessly mocked on Twitter after announcing a ban on thongs, singlets, and board shorts at Australia Day citizenship ceremonies.

Mr Morrison announced that councils would be forced to hold citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day and must enforce a strict dress code.

Twitter exploded with memes that criticised Morrison's dress code decision, with only a few people supporting the change.

The Mayor of the City of Greater Geraldton in Western Australia also chimed in: 'Bugger off and just stick to signing certificates Federal Government.'

Mr Styn created a petition arguing against the dress code.

'Here in Geraldton, our ceremony is done down on the beach in between sets of music on our wonderful family foreshore in about 40-degree heat,' Styn told ABC.

'Whilst I'm officiating Australia Day citizenship ceremonies, if you want to emblazon yourself in an Australian singlet or wear boardies cause you are joining in on the fun, I will let you up on the stage and gladly welcome you as a new Australian.'

The Prime Minister responded to the dress code criticism by stating: 'I'm the Prime Minister of standards.'

'It's one of the most, if not the most, important things as a nation we can give to anyone in the world. And when you do it, when you provide that gift, we would expect anyone who is receiving it to treat Australia with respect,' he said to 9 News.

'I wouldn't go along to my kid's graduation wearing boardies and things.'

Users were quick to point out that banning casual attire from citizenship ceremonies is hypocritical.

Mr Morrison and Barnaby Joyce, the former National Party leader, frequently ditch the suit and tie when hosting events or talking to the Press.

Twitter user Mike Ticher said 'make this mandatory for Australia Day citizenship ceremonies' and attached an image of Mr Morrison wearing a white button-up t-shirt and a skirt.

Others suggested that the mandatory dress code should consist of the same clothes our politicians are constantly wearing.

Smiffy posted on Twitter an image of Mr Joyce in a Cattleman hat, an unkempt button-up t-shirt, and a pair of shorts with the caption: 'Barnaby Joyce to oversee all citizenship ceremonies in his new role as Australia Day Uniform Compliance Envoy.'

Some even made fun of Mr Morrison's recent Photoshop controversy.

The Prime Minster made headlines when Twitter users realised that an official image of him had been accidentally altered to make it look like he had two left feet.

Twitter user Nisha Knot pointed out the Photoshop debacle in reference to the dress code: 'Multi-coloured stripy shorts and two left shoes'

The majority of tweets aimed at the Prime Minister were critical, but some welcomed the dress code.

Twitter user Michelle Cunningham believed that citizenship ceremonies should be treated as an honour.

'Receiving citizenship on Australia Day is traditional and it's a special ceremony where people don't usually wear stubbies and thongs.'

Twitter user m_larks posted 'failing to wear the new dress code for your Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony' and attached a gif of U.S President Donald Trump saying: 'We're rounding 'em up in a very humane way, in a very nice way.'
