CHANDIGARH: Punjab local bodies minister Navjot Kaur’s wife Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu has expressed her desire to contest the Lok Sabha elections from the Congress, submitting her application to Chandigarh Congress chief Pardeep Chhabra on Friday evening.

“Since no woman has represented Chandigarh from the Congress, I feel I should represent the city in the upcoming parliamentary elections. I will be able to do something remarkable for the city,” Navjot Kaur told TOI after giving her application.

Navjot Kaur said Chandigarh had failed to get projects and infrastructure as per its potential and is in dire need for an overall change. “MP Kirron Kher could not do anything concrete for the city. In fact, she has miserably failed to provide anything to the public and even the film industry, like a film institute or acting classes. No one is really concerned about the city.” “It is Le Corbusier’s UT, but could not be maintained on the lines it was created. Villages of the UT are poorer than those in Punjab. The city has failed to have its own rules and regulations in all segments. The city also could not garner any medical tourism and other required government infrastructure,” she said.

When asked about two other party ticket claimants Pawan Kumar Bansal and Manish Tewari, Navjot Kaur said, “I don’t have any claim. I am simply coming here from woman’s quota. Since BJP put up a woman candidate the last time, I feel Congress party should look into this matter.”

The application of Navjot Kaur — which she also submitted at the Chandigarh Congress Bhawan — has come a day before her first political function in the city —she will be attending the flag-hoisting and welcome ceremony on Republic Day at the EWS flats at Dhanas at 9am on Saturday. Pardeep Chhabra, Chandigarh Congress president, said, "Whatever requests I will receive on aspiring contestants from Chandigarh parliamentary seat,Iwillforwardthesameto the party’s central leadership. It will be the party’s decision to decide on the candidate.”
