No Bharat Ratna for NTR, TDP fumes

HYDERABAD: Disappointment prevailed among Telugu Desam Party (TDP) ranks as actor, party founder and former chief minister of united AP, NT Rama Rao, was not awarded the Bharat Ratna. On Friday, the Centre gave the nation’s highest honour to former president Pranab Mukherjee. The laurel was also awarded posthumously to singer Bhupen Hazarika and social activist Nanaji Deshmukh.

The demand for Bharat Ratna to be conferred on NTR has been there for over two decades. “In every Mahanadu (the annual meeting of the party) we have reiterated the demand for NTR to be conferred the Bharat Ratna but successive governments have ignored it,” said TTDP president L Ramana. He told TOI that the Centre’s refusal to confer Bharat Ratna on NTR showed how those in power were refusing to acknowledge the work of NTR both as an actor and a politician.
