A 20-year-old youth and his five-year-old niece were killed, and their relative critically injured, after their bike was hit by a tractor in north-east Delhi’s Shastri Park in the small hours of Friday, the police said.

They said the trio were returning home on a bike after attending a family function in Usmanpur when the accident happened.

“Shehzad was riding the motorcycle, while Sarfaraz [20] and Anas [5] were riding pillion. Shehzad is undergoing treatment at a hospital. The others were declared brought dead by doctors. They are all residents of Sadar Bazaar in north Delhi,” said a police officer.

The police control room received a call regarding the accident at 12.30 a.m. A police team reached the spot and rushed the injured persons to a hospital, where Anas and Sarfaraz were declared brought dead.

Eyewitnesses told the police that the bike was behind the loaded tractor when Shehzad tried to overtake it. The bike hit the tractor and all three passengers were run over by the tractor’s rear wheel.

The police said the tractor driver was caught at the spot. A case of rash driving and causing death by negligence has been registered at Shastri park police station.

“The tractor driver, identified as Sandeep alias Sunny, was arrested. Both vehicles have been impounded. The tractor was carrying hay to Ghazipur from Kashmere Gate,” said DCP (North-East) Atul Kumar Thakur.
