Mangaluru: Republic Day fervour pervaded across the district with educational institutions and organisations celebrating it in a befitting manner on Saturday. The highlight of the celebration was the gathering of more than 30,000 people, including 300 ex-servicemen celebrating it, on the sprawling Vanajakshi K Shripathi Bhat amphitheatre at Puthige in Moodbidri. An impressive march-past by NCC Cadets, Scouts, Guides, Rovers and Rangers added to the excitement.
Brigadier D M Purvimath, who unfurled the national tricolour said, “We need to craft a modern India that is both a land of talent and land of unlimited opportunities for the talented. This will materialise and India will be the strongest country in the world only if we all work together,” he said, adding “An innovative nation is built by innovative children. This must be the goal of all institutions, and schools must encourage children to think and to tinker.”
AT NEW MANGALORE PORT
New Mangalore Port celebrated the day at Dr B R Ambedkar Stadium. A vibrant parade by the CISF unit in Panambur, NMPT fire service, Scouts and Guides of Kendriya Vidyalaya 1, Panambur, and NMPT School gave momentum to the proceedings. Sreekrishna Karuthuri, CVO, who presided over the celebration and reviewed the parade, urged the port fraternity to rekindle the values instilled in the society by the founding fathers of the nation.
Indian Coast Guard
Coast Guard district headquarters (Karnataka) celebrated the day with an impressive ceremonial parade at Panambur. DIG S S Dasila, commander, Coast Guard Karnataka, said while the fundamental rights are enshrined in the Constitution as our inalienable rights, one needs to pay attention to the fundamental duties which are enumerated. The fundamental duties should have the greatest bearing on our conduct and activities, he said.
Ceremonial parades were also held at Coast Guard Station Karwar and Coast Guard Aeronautical Overseeing team, Bengaluru, which are functioning under the aegis of Coast Guard Karnataka. Adding to the spirit of celebration, Indian Coast Guard ships were ‘Dressed Overall’, a maritime tradition in which flags are arranged on a long rope called a dressing line and when hoisted, is a sign of celebration done on important occasions.
At Mahe
Manipal Academy of Higher Education celebrated the day at KMC Greens on Saturday. Vice-chancellor H Vinod Bhat, chief guest, said, “Today marks the day when India announced its arrival to the world. The edifice of a modern nation is built on the foundation of freedom. Freedom of power, speech and expression is this cornerstone of democracy that gets molested time and again and it is this basic right that we need to preserve and protect.”
