Jyoti Bhatt to be awarded Padma Shri

Vadodara: Celebrated artist Jyoti Bhatt, is the latest recipient of the Padma Shri award, from the Sansakarinagari. An announcement in this regard was made by the central government on the eve of Republic Day.
Bhatt, an alumnus of the famed Faculty of fine Arts, was a student of the first batch of the faculty. He dabbled with paintings, printmaking and photography, often derived from the Indian folk designs.
After graduating from the faculty, he went on to study at the Banasthali Vidyapith in Rajasthan. He then went to study art at the Academia di Belle Arti in Naples and the Pratt Institute in New York.
After returning from New York, Bhatt joined the Faculty of Fine Arts. Bhatt introduced print making using the intaglio technique to many stalwarts who were his contemporaries at the faculty. He then got interested in photography and started documenting folk art and traditions.
“I would like thank the government for this honour and the people for their warm wishes. Its overwhelming and it has made me happy,” Bhatt told TOI on being named as one of the recipient of the award.
Bhatt has a voluminous body of work to his credit. “Rabindranath Tagore, my mentors at Faculty of Fine Arts NS Bendre and KG Subramanyan among many others have been my inspiration,” he added.
His works figure in various international collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Smithsonian Institution in Washington and The British Museum in London.
Bhatt was born in Bhavnagar in 1934. He is married to noted ceramic artist Jyotsna Bhatt.
