As per the data from travel research company STR, the hotels of Dublin far surpassed their European counterparts as absolute occupancy increased to 83.8 percent – the highest level for any year in the Dublin database of STR.

Revenue per available room (RevPar) recorded its eighth consecutive year of growth. In comparison to 2017, RevPar increased 7.2 percent to €121.70.

STR analysts stated that they attributed the power packed performance to several events including the Six Nations Rugby Championship, the St Patrick’s Festival and many concerts from performers like U2, Florence and the Machine and Snow Patrol.

2018 experienced fewer visitors from the UK, traveling to the Republic on the back of Brexit, even though tourists from other jurisdictions remunerated for that. In the 11-month period till the end of November, the latest month for which statistics are there, over 9.8 million people travelled to the Republic, a growth of 6.8 percent on the same time in 2017.

Eventually, that led to Dublin hotels succeeding their European rivals, related to the occupancy and revenue terms. The hotel industry of Europe as a whole recorded a 1.2 percent growth in occupancy to 72.4 percent as RevPar grew 5.2 percent to €81.43.

The construction of hotels is continually improving and around 1,000 new rooms were added to the Dublin market in 2018 including the 145-bedroom Iveagh Gardens Hotel on Harcourt Street and the 140-bedroom Maldron Hotel on Kevin Street in Dublin 8.
