A heroic police dog has braved scorching conditions to chase down and nab a gang of teenage muggers - and rewarded himself with a well-earned dip.

Rocky, a long-haired German shepherd helped his handlers arrest five teenagers in Essendon, northern Melbourne, on Thursday night.

Officers were called to a house about 7.30pm after a 25-year-old man was reportedly assaulted and robbed of his phone and credit cards by five boys.

The gang allegedly arrived at the house on Rose Street in a stolen Subaru Impreza, later found by police after it was ditched.

All five teenagers left the car and sprinted down Riverside Avenue in nearby Keilor.

Rocky was unleashed in an attempt to catch them, and chased four down with ease despite Melbourne reaching a high of 40C on Thursday.

He found one hiding in long grass more than 1km from the Subaru, while another three were sniffed out hiding in nearby bushes.

The fifth teenager was arrested beforehand after a short pursuit on foot with police officers.

Rocky then enjoyed a swim in the nearby Maribyrnong River, cooling off for 25 minutes after his action-packed evening.

The dog's efforts have been recognised with a 'well-deserved rest' and he will be 'inundated with treats', a police spokeswoman said.

All five of the youngsters aged between 16 and 18 have been charged with offences including theft and assault, and were scheduled to appear in court.
