Contractor arrested for death of labourer

SURAT: Police arrested a contractor in connection with the death of a labourer who fell from the sixth floor of a building while fitting aluminium panels in Katargam on January 22.
Police said the worker was not provided with any safety equipment despite working at such a height.
According to Katargam police station sources, a new building named Paledium Pride was under construction at Amba Talavdi and the contract was given to Vijay Chauhan, who lives in Prabhadevi, Mumbai. Chauhan had hired one worker named Tohid Pathan, 20, to fix aluminium panels in the windows of the building .
On January 22, Pathan was entrusted with the task of this panel. He fell from the sixth floor in the night and died on the spot.
“We have arrested Chauhan and charged him with death due to negligence under IPC section 304(A),” said police.
Meanwhile, even 24 hours after the accident, no official from industrial safety department had visited the site, police sources said.
