Electronics and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Friday proposed to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath that the stretch between Noida till Meerut (both in U.P.) be declared as an electronic manufacturing cluster to bring India at par with global electronics hubs such as China and Taiwan.

The Minister was speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of a 100-acre greenfield electronics manufacturing cluster (EMC) of TEGNA Electronics, which is expected to attract investments of about ₹3,500 crore in the next 5-10 years, while creating 25,000-30,000 direct jobs and about a lakh indirect jobs. TEGNA Electronics is a special purpose vehicle (SPV) with leading electronic component makers as its investors. These include Oppo Mobiles, Foxlink Group, Waffer Group, Sahara & Infopower Group.

“Uttar Pradesh has the potential to lead India to become net exporters of electronic goods. Of the about 268 units in the country for manufacturing mobiles and related components, 94 have come up in Noida/Greater Noida alone. I want to request the U.P. CM to consider declaring the stretch between Noida and Meerut as electronic manufacturing cluster,” Mr. Prasad, who was sharing the dais with Mr. Adityanath said.

He added that under the Central government’s M-SIPs scheme, proposals for 59 projects worth almost ₹23,000 crore have been received for U.P. alone. Of these, the Centre has approved 22 projects worth ₹10,491 crore.

The infrastructure development cost of the greenfield EMC project is estimated at ₹115 crore, of which ₹50 crore will be funded by Ministry of Electronics and IT (Meity), ₹25 crore by Uttar Pradesh government as per different central and state government schemes.

The EMC will house manufacturing units of mobile phones, its accessories, servers, video recorders, point of sale devices, power banks, among other electronic devices. The cluster is targeted to be operational in the next 18 month with a capacity to produce two lakh products a day.

Mr Adityanath also stressed the fact that about 50% of the work in mobile and component manufacturing is happening in U.P., adding that the State government is committed to providing enabling policies and safe environment to the investors.
