NEW DELHI: The government today announced names of the
Padma awardees 2019 on the eve of the 70th
Republic Day, which included veteran journalist Kuldip Nayar (posthumous) , cricketer Gautam Gambhir, Indian choreographer Prabhu Deva, actor Kadir Khan (posthumous) and others.
While Teejan Bai an exponent of Pandavani was among the four
Padma Vibhushan awardees, the Bachendri Pal is among the 14
Padma Bhushan recipients. Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan are the second and third highest civilian awards of the country respectively.
This year 112 recipients have been selected for the prestigious awards. This includes 4 Padma Vibhushan, 14 Padma Bhushan and 94
Padma Shri awards.
The Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of high order and Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field.

Nearly 50,000 nominations for 2019 Padma awards:
Nearly 50,000 nominations for the 2019 Padma awards, which are given for work of distinction and exceptional achievement in different fields, were received by the Home Ministry. The record number of 49,992 nominations for the Padma awards received is 32 times higher over the nominations received in 2010 when just 1,313 nominations were received from general public, a home ministry statement said.
The Padma Awards are conferred on the recommendations made by the Padma Awards Committee, which are submitted to the Prime Minister and the President for approval. The Awards are announced on the eve of the Republic Day every year.
