V.K. Minimol to resign today as UDF loses majority in committee

V.K. Minimol, chairperson of the health standing committee of the Kochi Corporation, will step down on Friday after the UDF lost majority in the committee.

Her resignation comes on the eve of the Regional Monitoring Committee of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) approving the waste management measures adopted by the civic body on its Brahmapuram campus. The health standing committee is primarily responsible for waste management measures in the city, including the functioning of the treatment plant.

Debate on January 28

The no-confidence motion is scheduled to be considered on January 28. The LDF gained majority in the committee with a councillor, who had won election as a rebel candidate of the CPI(M), rejoining the party fold. Ms. Minimol, incidentally, sought an honourable exit than being voted out.

“The monitoring committee’s approval of work at Brahmapuram is a vindication of our work during the last three years. The health committee could streamline the functioning of the plant and win the confidence of the committee,” Ms. Minimol said.

During its period in office, the committee could bring in a series of legislation, including bylaws for the management of septage and construction waste, she added.
