While the cool change has hit Melbourne, other areas across the state's north and east continue to swelter.
The temperature was still a scorching 46 degrees in Swan Hill just before 4.30pm, while Mangalore was sitting at 46.3, Castlemaine was still 43 degrees and Sale was hovering at 45.3 degrees.
"The heat is still very intense in the north and east of the state," Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Michael Efron said.
"Bendigo is still about 43.5 degrees while Bairnsdale is 45.5 but we expect a dramatic cool change to move through both those areas around 5 to 6pm."
But the cool change is not expected to hit East Gippsland, where a fire is burning out of control in the town of Timbarra, until between 9 and 10pm. The temperature in Timbarra was still sitting at 40 degrees shortly before 4.30pm.
Mr Efron said the height of the blaze coupled with the extreme heat, erratic winds and unstable conditions had caused the fire to start to produce its own lightening.
"It is really producing a significant amount of lightening at the moment," he said. "It's grown to such a height that it caused a number of lightening strikes."
He said a southerly cool change will hit the region later Friday evening, bringing with it gusts of winds of 20km/h.
