Surat: Central government on Friday awarded three routes under the third round of regional connectivity scheme (RCS), UDAN-3 from the Diamond City, including operation of seaplanes by SpiceJet between Surat and Statue of Unity.

Two operators, including Star Air and SpiceJet, have been awarded three routes from Surat to Kishangarh, Belagavi and Statue of Unity.

Star Air is owned by Sanjay Godawat Group, which is into technical education field at Atigre taluka in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra. Sanjay Godawat Group of Institutions (SGI) is affiliated to Shivaji University, Kohlapur and is managed by Sushila Danchand Godawat Charitable Trust.

Sources said Udan scheme has failed in Surat as Air Odisha stopped the services due to financial weakness. Air Odisha was operating on Surat-Bhavnagar route, but it stopped flight services after operating a few flights.

“We hope that the new routes announced under UDAN-3 will remain successful. Both Star Air and SpiceJet are reputed names in the aviation industry. The route from Surat to Statue of Unity will have high passenger traffic. But, SpiceJet will have to choose perfect spot for preparing water aerodrome in the upstream or downstream of Tapi river,” said an airport official.
