A man accused of threatening to saw his love rival in half has erupted in court when he was denied bailed after allegedly chasing the man through a shopping centre.   

Jason Cooney, 47, is accused of engaging in a violent argument with his ex-partner Donna, 42, before tracking down her new boyfriend on Tuesday. 

He then allegedly chased the man with a chainsaw and threatened to cut him in half at a shopping centre in Kingsgrove, south-west Sydney.

After being denied bail for the string of charges, Cooney erupted in court and refused to stand for the magistrate when she quashed he pleas for freedom.  

The groundsman then kicked the dock in rage as he begged the judge to grant him bail, the St George Shire Standard reported.     

Police believe Cooney was involved in a domestic-related argument with his 42-year-old ex-partner in the early hours of Tuesday when he allegedly assaulted her and left her with facial injuries.

Two days later, he allegedly went to a nearby house where the woman was visiting a 48-year-old man and the men became embroiled in an argument.

Police allege Cooney followed the older man from the home through a nearby shopping centre and then threatened him with the chainsaw.

He was charged with intentionally choking a person with recklessness, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, using an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence, and stalking or intimidating intending fear or physical harm. 

Cooney is also accused of threatening police officers while in custody and is due to re-appear at Sutherland Local Court on February 11.
