MUMBAI: The Western Railway will carry out an 11-hour rail block in the first week of February for demolition of Delisle Road bridge when train services will be completely stopped between Churchgate and Lower Parel. Two hundred services will be cancelled during the block.
The traffic block will be undertaken from the night of February 2, at 10pm, and will extend till 9am on February 3. Long-distance trains arriving into Mumbai late night and in the morning will be terminated at Dadar.
Sources said that the Rajdhani will be given a longer halt at Borivli before reaching Dadar. “If the block gets over, we will bring Rajdhani to Mumbai Central,” said an official.
The proposal to carry out such a block on the Western Railway was sent to the Railway Board for approval and the final order was issued on Thursday night.
“We do not see any major hardship to commuters as the block will be on Saturday night and will go on till Sunday morning,’’ said chief spokesperson of Western Railway Ravinder Bhakar.
Asked about the overnight block, one of the longest in recent years, he said: “We will require that much time as a lot of debris will fall on tracks during demolition and it needs to be cleared. We cannot allow any train to pass below.”
The Delisle road over-bridge is shut for traffic since July 24.
