Following the attack, the man, woman, 40, and the girl were all rushed to hospital.

The man suffered injuries to his face, abdomen and chest, and had to be resuscitated before being placed in a coma.

He remains in a critical condition fighting for his life at Westmead Hospital.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Phil Templeman said all three patients needed 'clinical intervention' before being taken for treatment at hospital, and described it was a 'horrific and distressing scene'.

'Everybody who was on scene, at such a horrific and distressing scene, should be commended for their efforts to try and bring these animals under control and essentially save (the) lives of these victims,' he told reporters.

The girl suffered a bite to her back, and her mother injured herself while trying to defend her daughter.

The girl had been playing with one of the animals when it attacked her, before it turned on her mother when she tried to save her.

The man then stepped in and was attacked. At some point, a second dog became involved.

Her mother, 30, tried to protect her daughter and was also attacked.

The council spokesman said the dogs were sedated then taken to a local veterinary clinic for examination. They'll spend the night in the council's animal holding facility.

From there, the registered owner can decide to have them euthanised before police and council engage in further discussions about their future.

An RSPCA NSW spokeswoman said the animal welfare group was called in by police to help tranquillise the medium-sized dogs before the council removed them.

Authorities are seen bringing one of the dog allegedly responsible out of the yard and possibly already euthanized
