Bald is not beautiful: To look good, more and more youngsters going for hair transplant
Snehlata Shrivastav | TNN | Jan 26, 2019, 05:46 ISTNAGPUR: More and more youngsters are taking to hair transplant these days, doing so consciously and with awareness.
It is not that the older generation is not going for hair transplant, but a number of younger persons (19 to 25 years of age) too are approaching plastic surgeons for better looks and to be more presentable as it returns them their lost confidence with baldness. In fact not just men, even women are demanding hair transplant.
“The younger generation is becoming more professional in all forms. They want to look good, smart and handsome. They generally come well prepared for the procedure. Especially persons, who are in marketing-like fields, come with specific requirements. My youngest patient is 19 years old,” said Dr Suresh Chaware, senior plastic surgeon, who has completed 1,700 hair transplants in 12 years.
Dr Chaware said that he gets patients from all over the world as the procedure costs much cheaper here. Even doctors here on training from other countries get hair transplants done. “Baldness below the required age is considered as looking older, which no one wants. Peer pressure in particular forces them to look better with hair,” he said.
There are two types of hair loss — one is genetic and is called androgenetic alopecia and the other is Telogen Effluvium in which hair loss is due to physical or emotional stress. The second could also occur due to medication and diseases like thyroid disorders, post-partum hair loss, diabetes, cancer etc. The first type always has a pattern in hair loss.
The third type is alopecia areata, which is due to auto-immune disorder.
Dr Chaware, who also uses robot for transplant, however, cautions the patients not to get deceived from false claimers. He said hair transplant should be done only by proper qualified MCh degree holder doctors.
Dr Nitin Barde, another plastic surgeon performing hair transplants, supports Dr Chaware. But he said that in absence of any regulations in India, it is difficult to keep away from being cheated. “I know dentists doing hair transplants and how horrible it can get,” he said.
Dr Parikshit Janai said that hair loss mainly is genetic but it can be due to nutritional deficiencies. “Not all hair loss can be restored. Hair can be transplanted if there are follicles scalp with hair. Otherwise, it is just not possible to transplant hair. Shiny scalp generally doesn’t have follicles,” he said.
He said that earlier, fully bald persons would come for transplant but now even persons with a shift in hair line come for grafts.
Dr Barde, who has done hair transplants for NRIs in Germany, Singapore said that these people come on medical tourism directly or use the facility when they find it is cheaper here.
The procedure takes anywhere from 6-7 hours to 12 hours depending on the kind of transplant and the bald area. It may cost Rs50-70,000 or more depending on the requirement.
