VADODARA: A love marriage of 20 years ended in gruesome deaths of an estranged couple who had got divorced just 10 days ago.

Manish Patel, a 49-year-old jobless man, killed his wife Rachna (44) in cold blood at her house in Bhayli area on Thursday noon and minutes later, jumped to death from the sixth floor of the same building.

Rachna was working at a senior position in Linde Engineering, a part of The Linde Group.

The couple had got divorced on January 15 after a prolonged marital discord and were living separately for the past six months. While Rachna was living in a two BHK apartment on the fourth floor of D-tower in Season Residential Complex in the fast growing Bhayli area with her 18-year-old daughter, Manish was living with his parents, brother and sister-in-law in Karelibaug.

On Thursday morning, Manish came to Rachna’s house sometime between 10:30am and 11am to collect the clothes which were still lying there. According to police sources, Rachna was alone at the home and was packing her bag to leave for Udaipur to attend a relative’s wedding scheduled for the weekend. It is believed that some heated arguments broke out between the two over some issue.

Jobless Manish used to often borrow money from Rachna

The quarrel took a bloody turn as Manish picked up a copper pestle from the kitchen and hit Rachna behind her left ear.

Rachna died on the spot and Manish then called up her sister to inform that he had killed her. Rachna’s sister asked a relative to rush to the house to check on her.

Later, leaving Rachna in a pool of blood, Manish went to the sixth floor of the building. Meanwhile, the relative too reached there and saw Manish near the window of the sixth floor staircase. Before the relative could react, Manish jumped from there and died immediately. Since Rachana’s house was locked, her death came to light only after the cops reached there and broke open the door.

Police officials said that Rachna was working in a private company on Gotri-Vasna Road at a senior position, earning nearly Rs 1 lakh per month. Manish was more or less unemployed. He often used to borrow money from Rachna, which often resulted in altercations between them. Police said she earned around Rs 1 to Rs 1.5 lakh a month.

After killing her, Manish even took bath in the same house and changed his bloodstained clothes before committing suicide.

Police recovered the pestle from an open plot opposite the building. It is believed that before jumping from the sixth floor, Manish threw the pestle.
