In the absence of a zebra-crossing, pedestrians find it difficult to cross the intersection of Rajiv Gandhi Salai and Malaiyappa Mudali Street in Kelambakkam. The junction witnesses a heavy flow of traffic, through the day, as it connects Vandalur- Kelambakkam Road and Kelambakkam – Kovalam Road. Also many educational institutions are located in the vicinity. Pedestrians frequent the intersection because there are bus stops nearby.
Despite this, there are no safety features n place including a traffic signal, speed-breakers, signboards and reflectors.
Taking all these things into account, the Residents Welfare Association of Malaiyappa Mudali Street has given a representation to the Kancheepuram District Police.
“It takes not less than five minutes to cross the intersection. It is quite an ordeal,” says V. Chitra, a resident of Kelambakkam.
In addition, motorists violate safety rules by driving on the wrong side. A senior official of Kancheepuram District Police said, “Steps will be taken to provide a zebra-crossings at the intersection.”
