NAGPUR: State Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), Nagpur unit, exposed the mafia-Maoist link when they nabbed two arms dealers with two hand-made pistols and 25 live cartridges when the latter reached Nagpur railway station by Barauni-Secunderabad express Thursday midnight.
On the eve of Republic Day, the security agencies are already on their toes to keep tab on the anti-national forces and sleeper cells of terrorist and Maoist outfits.
The persons arrested have been identified as Swaroopsingh Jamunsingh (48) and Sanjay Khare (43) who were learnt to have procured the guns and bullets from Mungner in Bihar for allegedly supplying to cadres of Communist Party of India (Maoist) whose catchment areas include districts of Gadchiroli, Gondia, Chandrapur and parts of Yavatmal and Bhandara. Swaroopsingh and Khare were working at the instance of Chandrapur’s Ghugus-based coal mafia Shaikh Haji, said a senior official of the security unit. Haji is yet to be arrested.
Khare, a native of Yavatmal, already has cases of arms dealing against his name. Sources claimed Haji, also having several offences against him, had roped in Khare to bring firearms through Swaroopsingh who is learnt to have a network of such dealers based in Bihar.
Swaroopsingh, after procuring the guns, had boarded the train along with Khare. The two were having a firearm each and were travelling separately. The ATS unit had received tip off about them and its sleuths were following them for a long time. The co-ordinated operation to nab the two from the train had already started.
As per plan, ATS sleuths zeroed in on Swaroopsingh and Khare as soon as the train rolled into Nagpur railway station. The two were whisked away without even the railway security forces having any knowledge about the action. Both were produced before a court which has remanded them in ATS custody till February 1.
Sources claimed Swaroopsingh and Khare had been trying to mislead the investigation by frequently changing their statements. It is learnt Khare has claimed he was tasked to bring sound quality firearms from Bihar with a plan to bump off a Yavatmal-based corporator. ATS sleuths are now learnt to be trying to extract more information about their network.
