Railway bonanza: Two trains get extended to Chandigarh

CHANDIGARH: The Chandigarh railway station will now get two more trains as a part of the announcement made by Union railway minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday. The two trains are Firozpur-Ludhiana and Saharanpur-Nangal Dam.
The extension is the part of an announcement made by the railway minister that includes 22 train services plying on the Indian railways system. The extension of trains will help in development of the regions and utilize resources to the full extent, Goyal said, adding that the move would provide additional connectivity between various parts in the country. Chairman of the railway board, Vinod Kumar Yadav and member (traffic) Girish Pillai along with other senior officers were present at the meeting.
Addressing the gathering, Goyal said, “To reduce additional layover time of trains and emphasising on sweating the assets, we have decided to extend several trains across various zones of the railways.”
He added that first successful experiment of extension was introduced on Gatiman Express, which was extended from Agra to Gwalior and then to Jhansi. Accordingly, the following extension of 22 pairs of train services will help in development of these areas and help to utilize resources to the full extent.
Firozpur-Ludhiana Cantt Sutlej Express earlier used to get terminated at Ludhiana, but has now been extended to Chandigarh. On way it will also halt at New Morinda and Mohali. This will be second train between Chandigarh and Firozpur Cantt.
The second train, 64511/64512 Saharanpur-Nangal Dam Express, was earlier was plying between two station bypassing Chandigarh, but after announcement has been re-routed through Chandigarh connecting Mohali on the way.
All these extensions have been planned by utilizing the layover periods of the existing trains at their respective terminating stations. These extensions will help in more gainful utilization of coaching stock and will augment revenue of the railways using present assets with maximum utilization.
