BENGALURU: At a time when complaints abound against boorish behaviour of BMTC bus crew, the gesture of a driver and a conductor from the utility is winning hearts.
BMTC driver Shivakumar and conductor Yellappa Betageri, both attached to depot 18 (Whitefield), returned a bag containing Rs 1 lakh to an airport passenger who had left it in the bus.
On January 19, Subhadra Dutta, who travelled on a Vayu Vajra bus (KIAS-4/7 KIA- Whitefield route), left the bag in the bus (KA 57 F-0330).
Subhadra, from West Bengal, boarded the BMTC Vayu Vajra bus from Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) at 2:15pm and got off near Esteem Mall in Hebbal. She, however, forgot her bag which contained Rs 1 lakh cash, a mobile phone, ATM and Aadhaar cards.
Realising the bag wasn’t with her, Subhadra approached the BMTC depot in Hebbal and informed the staff about the same. The depot staff called the BMTC crew at the airport and they provided the details. “The woman had come to Bengaluru for some exam and was tense. She forget to take the bag along with her. On checking, we found the bag on the seat. We asked her to come and collect it from depot 18,” said Shivakumar.
Subhadra, who was little hopeful of getting the bag, thanked the crew for their honesty.
BMTC officials said they will honour both the driver and the conductor in its central office at Shantinagar on Friday. “There have been 96 such instances in the last one year where our drivers and conductors have exhibited honesty in returning lost luggages of passengers. However, some of them went unnoticed. Now we have decided to recognise such staff with awards and appreciate them so as to motivate others,” said a BMTC official.
