Absconding bank official arrested for alleged fraud

Suspended of a branch here, wanted for allegedly defrauding customers and the of Rs 43 lakh, has been arrested after remaining underground for over a year, police said Friday.

Joseph Christi, of the State of India's Kaalapatti branch here, had been absconding since November, 2017 after a case was registered against him, they said.

On a specific information, Christi was caught in district in Andhra Pradesh Wednesday, brought here Thursday and produced before a court which remanded him to judicial custody.

According to police, Christi had opened an account in the name of a customer and transferred Rs 17 lakh from the account of other customers to it. Besides, he had also allegedly siphoned off Rs 26 lakh using the overdraft facility, they said.

The fraud took place in November 2017 and Christi was placed under suspension, the police said.

A case was registered against him soon after and he had been absconding since then, they said.
