Ghaziabad: A 50-year-old woman hanged herself from a ceiling fan in her third-floor flat in Shipra Sun City in Indirapuram on Thursday when her daughter was away at her friend’s place for some college-related work.

The woman, Kanchan Rana, was a widow and was working as a teacher in a government school in Makanpur village. She was living in the flat with her 21-year-old college-going daughter Anukriti while her son, Rishav Rana (26), who works with a private firm, lives with his wife in Pune. Her husband, Dhirendra Singh Rana died 15 years ago.

In a suicide note recovered from the house, she mentioned “loneliness” as the reason for taking the extreme step.

According to a relative, in the letter addressed to Chandani, Kanchan apologised to her daughter and wrote that she wanted to do a lot of things for her. She further wrote that she had not been able to cope with the loss of her husband anymore and therefore taking the extreme step.

Kuldeep Singh, Shipra Sun City police post in-charge, said the body was sent for post-mortem and added that her son was on his way to Ghaziabad. Anukriti, who is in the third year of her graduation course from Delhi University, had gone to her friend’s place in Delhi on Wednesday to complete a college project. She was supposed to return on Thursday evening. However, earlier in the day, when she called her mother, the phone went unanswered several times. She subsequently informed her brother about the situation, who in turn, got in touch with some neighbours and asked them to check on his mother.
