HYDERABAD: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) continued its dominance even in the second phase of gram panchayat elections as counting of votes began at 2 pm on Friday. The ruling party bagged 2,600 panchayats while the Congress secured 800 seats.
Polling for 3,342 out of 4,130 panchayats was held for sarpanch posts and 26,191 ward members on Friday. While election to 788 panchayats was unanimous, polling could not be held in five panchayats owing to reservation and other issues.
The State Election Commission (SEC) on Friday ordered repolling in two places in Adilabad and Ranga Reddy districts and sought a report from the Nizamabad collector if repolling needs to be conducted there.
Repolling would be held in two wards on January 30, officials said. In the first instance, instead of three ward members as contesting candidates and NOTA option in ward No 8 in Nallavaripalli panchayat in Madgul mandal in Ranga Reddy, two symbols and ‘NOT’ got printed. Similarly, repolling was ordered in ward No 3 at Toshan thanda in Gudihathnur mandal in Adilabad where a tender vote was cast by one Rathod Monika. She claimed her vote was cast by another person of the same name.
As far as the confusion in Nizamabad is concerned, officials said the symbol of one of the contesting candidates for the sarpanch post did not appear in the ballot paper and that he was allotted a different symbol.
Meanwhile, polling went off peacefully in the rest of the state barring a few minor incidents. A total of 88.26% voters used their franchise. More than 10 districts registered more than 90% turnout, including Yadadri-Bhongir district (93.71%), Suryapet (92.82%), Siddipet (92.34%) and Medak (92.52%). The lowest turnout was in Jagityal with 80.23%.
