TNAU forecasts prices of ‘Thai Pattam’ veg crops
tnn | Jan 25, 2019, 00:20 ISTCoimbatore: Experts at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) have forecast farm prices of three major horticultural crops cultivated in Thai month in the state – tomato, brinjal and bhendi. Based on the analysis of the prices of these vegetables in the past 12 years in the Oddanchatram vegetable market, the Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell (Demic) under the Centre for Agricultural and Rural Development Studies of TNAU have forecast the prices of these vegetables.
Under the ‘Thai Pattam’ cultivation, the vegetable crops are sown during the Tamil month, which falls during January-February, and are harvested during March-April. According to the forecast, the farm price tomato would be Rs12-Rs14 per kg, brinjal price will be Rs17-Rs19 per kg and the price of bhendi would be around Rs15-Rs17 per kg.
K M Shivakumar, principal investigator at Demic, said the forecast doesn’t show any big change in the price trends. If there is a sudden demand for the vegetables from neighbouring states such as Kerala, the prices may go up, he said. On the other hand, if there is an inflow of vegetables from Karnataka, the prices may dip, he added. He added that the cell was working on forecasting the farm prices of shallot.
Shivakumar said the forecast was meant to inform farmers about the situation and would help the farmers make an informed decision on what crops to go for.
A release from TNAU said Tamil Nadu contributes less than 5% share of the total tomato area production in India. The major tomato producing districts were Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tirupur, Theni and Dindigul. Thai pattam was the most preferable season for tomato cultivation. Meanwhile, at present Coimbatore and Oddanchatram markets were witnessing enough brinjal arrivals from Tamil Nadu and Mysore, and bhendi arrivals from Oddanchatram, Pollachi and Vaikundam.
