PUNE: The Pune division has recorded nearly 6.28 lakh new voters in the draft voters’ list to be uploaded on the Election Commission website on January 31.
“The voter registration drive has generated maximum response in Pune district followed by Solapur and Kolhapur. The draft roll will be out on the website on January 31 after which voters can continue with the registration process till the cut-off date is announced by the Election Commission,” said Pune divisional commissioner Deepak Mhaisekar.
At a review meeting held on Wednesday, district-wise plan for total number of polling stations, the number of staff and EVMs and VVPATs required for the general election were discussed. With the elections likely to be held in March-April, the EC is firm in roping in teaching staff as booth level officers who would also help in distribution of the Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPIC).
The divisional commissioner will hold a meeting with police and administration officials and identify the sensitive polling booths to ensure that more police personnel are deployed at these booths. Correction of voters’ names and even addition would continue along with the distribution of EPIC cards, he added.
The state electoral office will not distribute EPICs on January 25, voters’ day, but hold awareness programmes. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has extended the deadline for publication of the state’s draft voters’ roll till January 31.
