Gonsalves to be installed as new archbishop on Sunday

Nagpur: Episcopal installation of Bishop Elias Gonsalves as the fifth archbishop of the Archdiocese of Nagpur will be held at St Francis De Sales Cathedral, Kamptee Road, at 3.30pm on Sunday.
The installation ceremony will be held in the presence of Oswald Cardinal Gracias of Bombay Archdiocese, followed by the thanksgiving holy mass which will be presided over by the archbishop-designate.
Addressing a press conference at the Archbishop’s house on Thursday, Father Jerome Pinto and Father Lijo Thomas said that nearly 5,000 people from all over the country are expected to attend the ceremony, including archbishops, bishops, clergy, religious and laity, and bishop Gonsalves’ family and friends.
Rev Gonsalves will begin his service to the people of the Archdiocese as their bishop after he is seated in the Cathedra, which is the bishop’s chair. The chair of bishop was vacant since the death of Archbishop Abraham Viruthakulangara on April 19, 2018.
Gonsalves said, “I look forward to serving the people of the Archdiocese of Nagpur with joy.” Gonsalves was ordained priest on April 1, 1990 at Vasai, for the Archdiocese of Bombay.
Born on July 4, 1961 at Chulna village, Vasai Road, Thane, he studied at St Pius X Seminary, Mumbai. He has done BA in history and economics from Bombay University. He also studied community-based development and leadership at St Francis Xavier University, Coady Institute, Canada.
