Japan name 3 South Africans in RWC training squad

2019-01-24 09:57

Cape Town - Japan have named three South African-born players in their training squad for the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

Wimpie van der Walt, who already has 9 Test caps for Japan, is included once more but the big news is that the former Bulls duo of Lappies Labuschagne and Grant Hattingh are the uncapped South Africans in the squad.

Both players, who play for the Sunwolves in Super Rugby, will be available for national selection later in the year.

The World Cup in Japan gets underway on September 20 when the hosts take on Russia in Tokyo.

Japan, under the leadership of current England coach Eddie Jones, delivered one of the greatest World Cup stories of all time when they stunned the Springboks by winning 34-32 in Brighton during the group stages of the 2015 showpiece.
