CHENNAI: In a move to mitigate the water woes the city might face, Metrowater will set up two waste water treatment plants — one in Perungudi and the other in Nesappakkam. The two new plants, which will be operational in six months, will have the capacity to treat 10MLD (million litres a day) of used water.
Speaking to TOI, a senior Metrowater official said, “The water from these plants will not be directly distributed through the Metrowater pipelines to households. The 20MLD water will be released into water bodies, which will increase water storage and replenish the groundwater table. Tenders were invited to build the new plants and the successful bidder was selected on Wednesday,” he said.
Water from the Perungudi plant will be released into the Perungudi lake, and it will boost the groundwater table along Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR). The treated water from Nesappakkam plant will be released into Porur lake, improving groundwater in areas from Porur to Nandambakkam, said the official.
The water, processed through three technologies, will be of highest quality and can be used for domestic purposes, the official added. First an ultra filtration membrane system will purify the water followed by a moving bed biofilm reactor. Finally, ozone will be used for disinfecting the purified water.
Metrowater has plans to supply the treated water to commercial users such as factories as well. Metrowater has roped in experts from IIT Madras for consultation for the project, the official said. Talking about the city’s water requirement, the official said the water requirement for the city was 1,200MLD. When the reservoirs brim with water, the piped supply is 830 MLD. When the storage levels begin to dip, the supply will be 650 MLD. When water sources are drained only 450MLD of water will be supplied and that too not on a daily basis, he said.
