‘Govt has failed to alleviate poverty’

Bhubaneswar: BJP leader Aparajita Sarangi on Thursday said the poverty in and around Bhubaneswar proved that the Naveen Patnaik government had done little to improve the people’s quality of life in the past 19 years.

“The BJD has been ruling Odisha since 2000. The state used to come among the bottom-five in per capita income then. Now, it is among the bottom-10,” Sarangi said.

“According to data submitted by the state to the Centre in 2016, around 58 lakh out of 86 lakh families of the state were poor. This means that 66 per cent families of the state are poor and deprived,” she added.

Sarangi further said Odisha had received only Rs 2,198 crore in 2017-18 under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), while its neighbouring West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh received Rs 6,000 crore and Rs 5100 crore, respectively, to alleviate poverty in rural areas. “Due to the state’s bad performance, the state did not get funds,” she alleged.
