NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal on Thursday appointed a committee headed by a former judge of Delhi high court to deal with the matter of nearly 52,000 industrial units operating illegally in non-conforming and residential areas of the capital.
NGT asked the committee to take charge within two weeks of the directions and said the accountability of making the panel functional will lie with the Delhi chief secretary and Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) chairman. The bench, headed by NGT chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, said Delhi Police can also be asked to provide security during inspections.
“The mandate of the committee will be to take stock of the extent of violation of law and prepare a time-bound action plan to deal with it,” the bench said.
NGT also asked Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (DSIIDC), DPCC and municipal corporations to nominate officers with high competence, seniority and time to the panel.
It said the panel will also be making a realistic assessment of the compensation for damage already caused and cost of restoring the damage.
NGT took cognisance after a TOI report highlighted how thousands of polluting industries were operating illegally in the capital, both in non-conforming and residential areas. According to a DSIIDC report which TOI had also cited, there are 51,837 units operating in non-conforming/residential areas for which the DSIIDC has asked for the three corporations to initiate action.
