'People were calling me gypsy scum': British tourists crash their seven-seat car before erupting into a blazing family argument - hours after one of their clan, 26, was charged with assault

  • Group of British travellers have been causing carnage in New Zealand for weeks
  • On Sunday 13 January, group was filmed leaving rubbish on Takapuna beach
  • One man, 26, has been charged with an alleged assault on the same day
  • On Thursday the group crashed their car and left it abandoned in Auckland

The rowdy British travellers causing havoc across New Zealand have crashed and abandoned their car in Auckland.

Joe Doran said his father crashed the seven-seat Honda Odyssey because he was distracted by people calling them 'gypsy scum' while reversing in Mangere.

The car hit a curb with such force that the front airbags popped and two tyres burst.

The family were seen leaving the car and arguing while walking away with their belongings including a child's car seat.

The car was left abandoned on a street near Auckland Airport, where somebody daubed an offensive word on the back windscreen

'People were shouting at us and I look back and hit a curb,' the father told the New Zealand Herald. 'I punctured the wheel of the car.'

Joe Doran added: 'People were calling me gypsy scum and my father crashed the motor over people calling me gypsy scum.'

However, witness Nellie Harris, 25, said this was untrue as there was no one out on the road and no one shouting.

'The car came round the corner and hit a kerb that sticks out from the pavement,' she told MailOnline.

'It was a huge bang and we saw the air bags had popped and the car grind to a halt.'

Ms Harris, who was waiting to have her own car repaired at a garage next to the crash site, then watched in amazement as the Doran clan piled out of the car in which they toured the length of New Zealand's north island.

'The guy with dyed blonde hair had been driving and it looked his parents and his wife and I think two children, one in a pram,' she said.

'The driver's wife was absolutely furious, screaming at the driver. She was telling him, 'you don't know how to drive!' over and over in his face.

'The car was pouring black smoke but they just grabbed all their stuff and ran off down the road, as fast as they could.'

A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: 'It could have been really serious. My friend went up to the older woman and asked if they were alright and if she could help and the woman just told her to eff off and get effed.

'She was ranting and raving. The whole lot of them took off down the road.'

The car, littered with food scraps, Red Bull cans, children's toys and an advice leaflet from the British consulate, was still at the scene on Wednesday night.

The four adult Dorans, all served with 28-day deportation liability notices by New Zealand’s immigration service, are understood to be ready to leave the country on Friday, and head home with their young children.

They are holed up in a hotel room eating pizza on what may be their last night in the country that has come to despise them for their antics.

The manager, who asked MailOnline not to reveal the location, said: “We’re not happy they’re here but they are and for now there’s been no issue.”

But another member of the extended family is spending the night in police custody after being charged with reckless driving and assault of the young woman whose video of the Dorans filthy beach picnic began the saga.

The 26-year-old man, whose name has not been released, is accused of using the car 'as a weapon' by driving towards her on Auckland's Takapuna Beach.

A conviction for assault using a car carries a maximum sentence of five years, while reckless driving carries three months in prison and a fine up to £2,330.

The man appeared in Auckland District Court on Thursday and will appear again on Friday when he is expected to apply for bail.

The alleged assault took place on Sunday 13 January, the day a group of British travellers was filmed leaving beer bottles and piles of rubbish on the city's Takapuna beach.

Witness Krista Curnow alleged the group of about 12 tourists turned violent when she asked them to clean their mess as they left the beach.

She said a young boy threatened to 'knock the brains out' of locals who confronted them and that the driver of the car tried to take her mobile phone.

The British family has been causing trouble in New Zealand since arriving before Christmas.

They have been accused of trashing an apartment, leaving restaurants without paying and stealing from shops.

One woman, Tinamarie Cash, 26, pleaded guilty in court to stealing Red Bull, rope and sunglasses from a service station.

Five members of the 12-strong group have been slapped with deportation orders on January 16 after causing a ruckus at Hamilton Burger King, where they were seen speaking to police.

The deportation orders mean they have 28 days to leave the country.

Police said in a statement on Thursday: 'Police investigating an alleged incident involving a vehicle at Takapuna Beach on 13 January have arrested a 26-year-old British national.

'He has been charged with assault with a weapon and reckless driving.

'The man is due to appear in the Auckland District Court today.

'As this matter is now before the courts, police are unable to comment further.'

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff previously called them 'a*******s' and 'trash' in interview on a local radio station.

WHO'S WHO IN THE UNRULY BRITISH FAMILY ROILING NEW ZEALAND?

THE MATRIARCH

The matriarch of the unruly clan being hunted by outraged Facebook vigilantes is grandmother Barbara Doran, 55.

Mrs Doran has told Daily Mail Australia that she is too scared to sleep at night.

The family feel they are being 'tortured' by the public and insist they have done nothing wrong.

'I'm very, very frightened, honestly,' Mrs Doran said.

THE FAMILY SPOKESMAN

Her son, Joe Doran, has become the family's number one spokesman, sparring with media at different sites across the country.

Social media vigilantes tracking the family across New Zealand have dubbed Mr Doran 'Honest John'.

That's because he has repeatedly given his name to reporters as 'John Johnson'.

THE SPOKESMAN'S WIFE

Joe's wife is Miley Doran and pictures on Facebook show the couple dancing happily at their wedding in 2017.

THE RED BULL THIEF

Tina Marie Cash faced a New Zealand court last week and pleaded guilty to theft charges relating to a stolen Red Bull, rope and sunglasses.

WHERE ARE THEY FROM?

The family has lived in various caravan parks around the East Midlands in the UK.

Neighbours who say the family lived on the Washingborough Road caravan site in Lincoln say Joe Doran left the area two years ago 'to escape trouble'.

He is believed to have then moved to a second site in Bitteswell, Leicestershire, where he lived for a brief period.

A neighbour, who knows the family, told MailOnline: 'We are family and we stick together.

'Everything that's been said about them in New Zealand isn't true. They are a good family.'

One member of the family has bizarrely claimed they are related to Britain's 10th richest man.
