MADURAI: A 17-year-old boy, who was recently taken to S S Colony in the city for an inquiry related to a theft, died in Government Rajaji Hospital here after developing health complications.
Alleging that the boy died due to police torture during the interrogation, protesting family members blocked Panagal Road in front of the hospital on Thursday noon.
The family members were joined by functionaries of CPM and AMMK in the protest. The group demanded a fair inquiry and action against the policemen involved in the alleged police atrocity. The road block started around 1.30 pm and lasted a couple of hours during which time a team led by the revenue divisional officer and police tried to pacify them.
As they refused to withdraw the protest, more than 100 of them were arrested and shifted to a nearby hall and released later.
The deceased boy was identified as M Muthukarthick of Kalai Ambalakarar Street in Kochadai. He was working as cleaner in an earth mover vehicle at Pandhalkudi in Virudhunagar district. The victim’s mother, M Jaya, lodged a police complaint in which she stated that her son was picked up by a four-member police team led by inspector Alexraj. Sub-inspector Sathish brought him to Thilagar Thidal station on January 13 where he was kept in illegal custody till January 16.
She said they received a phone call from Muthukarthick from the S S Colony station asking them to come there. When they rushed there, they found her son in bad health. “My son told us that he was beaten badly by a team of police due to which he vomited blood. The police took him to a private hospital for treatment and back to the station before informing us,” she said.
The family admitted the boy to a private hospital from where he was shifted to Government Rajaji Hospital on January 18 as his health condition deteriorated. The boy’s mother demanded a detailed inquiry and stringent action against the policemen involved in the alleged illegal detention and custodial torture.
