Coal mine loot: Six arrested, trucks seized

Chandrapur: Gadchandur police have cracked the case of armed loot of truckloads of coal from WCL’s Painganga coal mine, and arrested six members of the gang involved in the loot. Rounding up operations are underway at Ghugus and Wani since last two days to nab the rest of the gang members and drivers involved in the loot. Cops also seized seven trucks allegedly used in transportation of looted coal from Wani on Thursday.
A gang of around 40 armed gangsters had barged into Painganga open cast mine under WCL Wani area in the wee hours of January 19. They had brought six trucks and loaded them with coal with the help of JCB machines. Security personnel and WCL employees were held at swordpoint. WCL staffers were, however, able to note the registration numbers of only two trucks as the gang fled from the scene.

Based on the investigations and intelligence inputs, a team of Gadchandur police nabbed six accused involved in the coal loot from their residences at Ghugus on Wednesday. The six accused were identified as Yusuf Sheikh, Raju Eskar, Juned (Shibbu), Shahrukh Khan Gulshare, Aslam Kureshi, and Kausar Sheikh. They were produced before the JMFC court and remanded to PCR till January 28.


Sources claimed that more arrests were made from Ghugus and Wani on Thursday. A team of Gadchandur police also seized six Hyva trucks and a trawler truck from Wani in Yavatmal district on Thursday. SP Maheswar Reddy confirmed the seizure of the trucks, but withheld details of the arrests.


Meanwhile, CGM, Wani area, UA Kawade maintained they are reviewing lapses in security and are going to strengthen security further at Painganga mine. He claimed that the number of security personnel will be increased, more security blocks will be installed on the road used by the coal mafia, and category of the security will be strengthened to avoid any more such incidents.


Congress state vice president and MLA Vijay Wadettiwar has charged that Painganga mine is subject to large scale coal theft, and also alleged the involvement of WCL officials in it. The deputy leader of opposition has also demanded a CBI inquiry into the coal loot from the mine.
