Are they Sirius? Developer behind Sydney's cracked Opal Tower could be handed ANOTHER major harbourside project

The property developer responsible for the cracked Opal Tower at Sydney Olympic Park could win the tender for another major harbourside project.

Speculation is mounting that Ecove is in line to redevelop the iconic Sirius site in the Rocks along with RDA Property Group.

A number of local politicians as well as Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore have penned an open letter to New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian, stating handing the tender to Ecove would be a 'grave mistake.'

'We understand the sale of the Sirius building is imminent and there are rumours that the Opal Towers developer Ecove is the government's preferred buyer,' the letter says.

'Such a sale would provoke distrust in government processes and objectives.'

Ecove and RDA Property Group chose not to comment on the status of the tender due to confidentiality agreements surrounding the bid, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Sirius is the harbourside apartment block which has been used for social housing for more than three decades.

Boasting world class views, the block has been unoccupied for the last 12 months, with Maya Demetriou, 91, the last resident to move out in February 2018.

The local MPs and Clover Moore want the NSW government to retain the 'structurally-sound, architecturally iconic building' for affordable housing.

Developer Ecove generated negative headlines after cracks on a 10th-floor concrete panel on Christmas Eve saw the evacuation of residents from almost 400 apartments in its newly completed building in Homebush.

Out of the 392 apartments, 105 buildings have been declared 'unliveable' with structural repairs potentially required on every level.
