School official charged for using own insurance to help student

Casey Smitherman, superintendent of Elwood, Indiana schools faces fraud charges after allegedly using her own insurance to help a sick student.

SOUNDBITE: RODNEY CUMMINGS, MADISON COUNTY PROSECUTOR, SAYING: "Doing the right thing is good.

She didn't do the right thing the right way." According to court documents, Smitherman took a 15-year-old student showing signs of strep throat to an emergency clinic and used her son's name to pay for the visit and obtain a prescription for Amoxicillin for him.

SOUNDBITE: RODNEY CUMMINGS, MADISON COUNTY PROSECUTOR, SAYING: "I think she's already learned a lesson and understands it fully in my opinion.

So I think there have to be some consequences but they shouldn't be career jeopardizing." The prosecutor says they will recommend Smitherman attend a diversion program in lieu of jail time.
