Ahead of R-Day, tight security in S Odisha
Hrusikesh Mohanty | TNN | Jan 24, 2019, 23:26 ISTBerhampur: Security has been tightened in southern districts on Thursday ahead of Republic Day on Saturday. Heavy security forces have neen deployed in Maoist-hit Kandhamal and Gajapati districts.
The security measures have been taken after the outlawed Maoist organization urged people to observe the Republic Day as black day through posters.
The posters are found in some areas of Baliguda, Tumudibandh and Kotagarh police limits on January 19 and 20.
The posters of Kalahandi-Kandhamal-Boudh- Nayagarh (KKBN) division of the outlawed CPI(Maoist) justified the murder of Rabindra Mallick, a watchman of a construction company camp on Sudrukumpa-Tikarapada road on January 6.
“Mallick was killed as he was an informer of police and other informers will face the same fate,” the ultras said in through the posters.
“As the extremists are active in Kandhamal district, tight security arrangements have been put in place there,” said a senior police officer.
The forces are keeping a watch on the situation in the rebel-hit district while anti-Maoist operations have been stepped up, he said.
“The security personnel would keep a close watch on vulnerable areas of Boudh, Ganjam, Gajapati and Kandhamal districts,” said DIG (Southern Range) Asish Singh.
“We have already alerted the forces to step up the security measures for peaceful celebration of the Republic Day,” said additional SP (Kandhamal) Utkal Ranjan Das.
As part of the precautionary measures, he said police launched checking of suspected vehicles from Thursday.
An additional SP, two DSPs and several police officers and around five platoons of police will be deployed for Republic Day parade at Phulbani, he said.
“Around five platoons of forces will be deployed in the district level celebration of the Republic Day at Paralakhemundi in Gajapati district while the combing operation has been launched in Maoist-hit areas,” said SP (Gajapati) A K Das.
The bomb disposal squad and dog squad would be pressed into service for the main function at Paralakhemundi, he added.
