PUNE: The crime branch of the Pune police on Tuesday arrested two men for their alleged involvement in the murder of a man whose body was found in Mutha river on January 20.
Police probe has revealed that the suspects, Irshad Shaikh (28) and Somnath Thorat (27) of Kalewadi, had bludgeoned Krishna Girish Sonawane (22), also of Kalewadi, in Ravet on January 19 over Rs 100, which the deceased owed to Shaikh.
“The suspects invited Sonawane for consuming liquor in Ravet. When Sonawane was drunk, the suspects throttled him and also bludgeoned him to death. They then transported Sonawane’s body in a light commercial vehicle and dumped it into Mutha river from the Warje bridge. The duo killed Sonawane as he owed Rs 100 to Shaikh. It is also claimed that Sonawane was harassing a woman known to Thorat which had infuriated the suspects,” Samir Shaikh, assistant commissioner of police (crime) told TOI.
After finding the body in the river, the crime branch (unit-III) team led by senior inspector Deepak Nikam started looking for missing person’s complaints in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.
“During the course of investigation, we found that the description of the deceased person was matching with a missing person’s complaint registered with the Wakad police,” the officer said.
After the police ascertained the identity of the deceased, sub-inspector Sanjay Gaikwad of the crime branch got a tip-off that Sonawane had gone out with Shaikh and Thorat.
“We immediately took both the suspects into custody on Tuesday. During questioning, the duo admitted to their involvement in the murder,” Shaikh added.
Police said Shaikh was a vegetable vendor, while Thorat worked as a driver. “Sonwane was a welder,” police said.
